Tranquil Gathering: A Modern Twist on Japanese Restaurant Design

A Unique Blend of Japanese and Modern Elements

Inspired by Japanese aesthetics, the Tranquil Gathering restaurant by designer Hung Teng Hsiao seamlessly combines traditional Japanese elements with modern design. The result is a unique and harmonious dining space that offers a fresh take on Japanese cuisine.

The main concept behind Tranquil Gathering is to break away from the traditional Japanese style and create a flexible and modern dining experience. The design team achieves this by incorporating various Japanese materials and elements, while also introducing modern touches. The space configuration is carefully arranged to encourage client interaction and gatherings, presenting a unique spatial style based on modern elements.

One of the standout features of Tranquil Gathering is the use of light wood tones as the main axis of the space. The design team utilizes wooden grid cuttings to create a three-dimensional and harmonious contour throughout the restaurant. This vertical shape extends to the bar area, creating a cohesive design language.

In terms of materials, the design team employs PU simulation leather in the wall that runs from the first floor to the second floor. This choice allows for diverse changes in materials, showcasing the main tone of the Japanese style. The PU artificial leather materials are carefully selected to feature various textures such as slate, annual rings, grayscales with screws, and rivets, adding depth and visual interest to the space.

To ensure a comfortable dining experience, the design team incorporates functional elements such as hollow bricks and glass cuttings. These elements not only enhance the aesthetics but also provide practicality, allowing for easy interactions and gatherings. Additionally, the second floor features private booths designed with the concept of reunion in mind. Circular elements such as desktops and lamps create a warm and inviting atmosphere, perfect for intimate gatherings.

Tranquil Gathering was completed in August 2018 in New Taipei City, Taiwan. The project showcases the meticulous research and attention to detail that went into creating a modern Japanese dining experience. By layering the space with grayscale, wooden materials, and stone materials, the design team successfully captures the essence of Japanese aesthetics while infusing it with a contemporary twist.

Tranquil Gathering received the Bronze A' Design Award in 2021 for its outstanding and creatively ingenious design. This prestigious award recognizes designs that incorporate best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to quality of life improvements. With its seamless blend of Japanese and modern elements, Tranquil Gathering truly stands out as a unique and innovative restaurant design.
